Individual Giving
On behalf of Alberta Theatre Projects, I’d like to invite you to support theatre about what’s now, what’s new, and what’s next, by making a tax deductible donation to our company. I hope you’ll consider joining a group of highly committed Canadians who play a pivotal role, by providing the moral and financial support necessary to produce great contemporary theatre on our stage, and to make an impact in our community through the art form of theatre.
Your donation helps us raise the 31% of our overall revenue that must come from supporters like you, if we are to continue to create fresh, original theatre about what it feels like to be alive right now. Your gift becomes part of the roughly 2 million dollars we raise annually, from donors, businesses, and government, to bring an abundant showcase of the best Canadian theatre artists to our audience, all season long; to launch the most original new plays in Canada, at our annual Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays; and to introduce young people, new audiences, and the wider community to our art form, through our many Lifelong Education and Growth for Artists, Community and Youth programs (known as ‘LEGACY’ programs.)
Our individual philanthropic programs, The Green Room, and The Director’s Circle, offer you a chance to get up close and personal with the art and artists you’ll see on our stage. Depending on your level of giving you may find yourself at an intimate celebration of our work, a first rehearsal or read through of a play, or having conversations with Alberta Theatre Projects artists at one of our exclusive Director’s Circle events.
At Alberta Theatre Projects, 62% of expenses go directly to the art and artists you see on our stage. However, our ticket pricing policy is designed to ensure that a wide range of our community has access to our work. Revenue from tickets covers only 34% of what it costs to produce our season. Through your membership, you will directly support us in our efforts to bring an abundant showcase of live contemporary theatre to a growing audience of adventurous, passionate Calgarians of all ages and cultures.
I hope you see the value of making a powerful and meaningful contribution to our company. With your help, Alberta Theatre Projects will continue to be fertile ground. A place where great things grow. A dazzling bounce into what’s now, what’s new, and what’s next. Thank you for your support, and see you in the theatre!
Yours Truly,

Vanessa Porteous
Artistic Director

Dead Patron’s Society
The Dead Patron's Society is a group of extraordinary people dedicated to enhancing the financial stability of Alberta Theatre Projects through major gifts and/or planned giving. Through our two endowment funds at the Calgary Foundation, the ATP Fund and the playRites Fund, friends and patrons can decide to give a major monetary gift, donate securities or shares, name Alberta Theatre Projects as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, make a bequest in their will, bestow their estate or promise a future major gift.
All donors to either the ATP or playRites Funds will become members of the Dead Patron's Society.
Donations to our Endowments are managed at the Calgary Foundation and are held in perpetuity. It is the interest income on these funds that provide Alberta Theatre Projects on an ongoing basis, much needed capital to support the activities of the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays (playRites Fund) and operating revenue (ATP Fund).
We wish to acknowledge the following members of The Dead Patrons Society who have named us as a beneficiary of their life insurance policy or made a bequest in their will:
Andrew & Mavis Holder
Michael & Heidi Gatens
John Humphrey & Laura McLeod
Ron Newman
The PlayRites and ATP Funds
The creation of the playRites Fund was announced by Bonnie DuPont, Group Vice President of Enbridge Inc. on February 2, 2006, in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays. It is through the Festival that Alberta Theatre Projects maintains its role as a renowned national centre of excellence in the development and dissemination of new Canadian plays.
The ATP Fund was established in 2003 when a group of patrons decided to create The Dead Patrons Society, allowing individuals to make major gifts, bequests, or take out life insurance policies with Alberta Theatre Projects being the prime beneficiary of that life insurance policy.
To date, more than $1,334,585 has been donated to the playRites Fund and $1,305,576 to the ATP Fund. We are hopeful that with your support both these funds will continue to grow.
We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the following individuals and corporations who have given generously to the playRites and ATP Funds.
